Zangwill in Palestine |
| Description: |
Black and white group photograph of the Maccabeans on their pilgrimage to Palestine, including the author Israel Zangwill. - Zangwill became a supporter of the Zionist cause, having met Theodor Herzl in 1895, and and one year later attended the rally of the Maccabeans with Herzl, which was in essence the beginning of the British Zionist movement. Zangwill visited Israel in 1897, and became a vocal advocate of Jewish nationalism which, he argued, could be realized in any area, and not exclusively in the Land of Israel. The 'Order of Ancient Maccabeans' were formed in 1891, devoted to philanthropic and cultural activities among the Jewish community and Zionism. |
